An old musician playing the lyre to a girl seated beside him; oil on metal panel, bears scratched-in inscription 'HL / 223' verso, 25.1 x 21.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work fuses a somewhat Classical subject, featuring a bearded figure in robes playing a lyre, with what feels like a dark, secluded Rocky water shoreline setting, possibly on the coast of Ireland a combination which is characteristic of Westall's oeuvre. The slightly haggard figure of the seated, bearded man is also one which recurs in Westall's paintings, such as that of Belisarius, which sold at Bonhams, London, on 24 October 2018 (lot 136). Westall, R.A (Hertford 1765-1836 London) And also: Dowle Fine art Biblical drawing scene.
