George Joseph Herriman III (August 22, 1880 – April 25, 1944) was an American cartoonist best known for the comic strip.
Soon after graduating in 1897, he sold a sketch of the Hotel Petrolia in Santa Paula to the Los Angeles Herald. This landed him a $2-per-week job there as an assistant in the engraving department, where he occasionally did drawings for advertisements and political cartoons.

An old musician playing the lyre to a girl seated beside him; oil on metal panel, bears scratched-in inscription 'HL / 223' verso, 25.1 x 21.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work fuses a somewhat Classical subject, featuring a bearded figure in robes playing a lyre, with what feels like a dark, secluded Rocky water shoreline setting, possibly on the coast of Ireland a combination which is characteristic of Westall's oeuvre. The slightly haggard figure of the seated, bearded man is also one which recurs in Westall's paintings, such as that of Belisarius, which sold at Bonhams, London, on 24 October 2018 (lot 136). The oil painting is signed, with the date (1924) in pencil on the back of the frame also on the rear of the artwork is the name of the frame maker in Malta. Vincent Apap, OBE (Maltese: 13th November 1909 – 15th February 2003) was a Maltese sculptor who is well known for designing various public monuments and church statues, most notably the Triton Fountain in Valletta. He has been called "one of Malta's foremost sculptors. He attended the government central school, and in 1920 he began to attend evening classes in modelling and drawing. He was one of the first students to enroll in the newly established School of Art in 1925, where he studied sculpture under Antonio Micallef. In 1927, he won a scholarship to the British Academy of Arts in Rome.
