 A pair of pencil sketches by Giovanni Battista Cipriani R.A. (1727-1785). Framed in Baroque gold frame with image clear UV glass.  Provence is from the collection of Joseph Wilton R.A.  Giovanni was an Italian painter and engraver, who lived in England from 1755. A Founder Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, Giovanni Battista Cipriani was an Italian-born artist who designed the interior of the Academy’s first home at Somerset House. Cipriani was born in 1727 in Florence. He began his artistic training with the Anglo-Florentine artist Ignazio Hugford, who also taught his compatriot and future fellow Royal Academician Francesco Bartolozzi.

Birket Foster was born in North Shields on the Tyne but was brought up in London and was apprenticed to a wood engraver. On the rear of the artwork in pencil: “Starting The Job”, Carleton Avenue, Wallington (SM6 9LW).  Edward Ardizzone was born in the port city of Haiphong, then known as Tonkin, in the north of French Indo-China, Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone was an English painter, print-maker and war artist, and the author and illustrator of books, many of them for children. In 1905, his mother Margaret Ardizzone returned to England with her three eldest children. They were brought up in Suffolk. Edward worked part-time as an instructor in graphic design at Camberwell School of Art and as a visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art. The British Library published an illustrated bibliography of his works in 2003. A blue plaque unveiled in 2007 commemorates Ardizzone's home at 130 Elgin Avenue in Maida Vale.

Clarkson Stanfield was a prominent English painter (often inaccurately credited as William Clarkson Stanfield) who was best known for his large-scale paintings of dramatic marine subjects and landscapes. He was the father of the painter George Clarkson Stanfield and the composer Francis Stanfield. Stanfield made multiple trips to Italy, including his first tour in 1824 was with William Brockedon.  In 1830 Stanfield travelled through Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy to Venice, where he created the panorama Venice and its Adjacent Islands.  In 1938 Stanfield visited Ischia from Naples and made many sketches of the island. The Grand Tour was a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, that was undertaken by upper-class young European men in the 17th to early 19th centuries.

Michael Gilbery (born Goldberg) was born in Londonon 18th October 1913. After leaving school he gained a scholarship to St Martins school of art. Michael first gained recognition when, at the age of seventeen, his portrait of his father was exhibited in the Royal Academy and was hailed a triump by a number of leading critics. Michael was also commissioned to paint the Royal Historic Cavalcade for George VI coronation.

He was also the president of the British Institution, which was established in 1806 to provide an alternative exhibition space to the Royal Academy. In 1821, he travelled to Rome to seek out the young British artists whose flourishing academy he had heard so much about.
